How do you write a good personal letter for your job application?

A good cover letter should spark interest, show who you are as a person and why you are the right fit for the job. It should complement your CV – not repeat it – and give the employer a sense of your personality, motivation and how you would contribute in the workplace.

Here is a guide on how to write a strong personal letter:

1. Tailor the letter to the job

Read the job posting carefully. Highlight the parts of your experience and your qualities that match what the employer is looking for. Tailor the letter for each job you are applying for – it is quickly noticeable if a letter is written in a general way.

2. Write a clear introduction

Start by explaining what position you are applying for and why you are interested in it. Show that you are familiar with the workplace. Example

“I am applying for the position as a licensed veterinary nurse at Djurkliniken Syd, because I am passionate about small animal care and am impressed by your work with rehabilitation and surgery.”

3. Tell us who you are and what you can do

Briefly describe your education, experience and skills, but focus on what is most relevant to the position. Provide examples that demonstrate your professional skills or particular strengths. Examples

“As a licensed veterinarian with three years of experience in small animal practice, I have developed a safe hand in emergency situations and a good ability to communicate with pet owners in sensitive situations.”

4. Highlight your personal qualities

Employers want to know what you are like as a colleague and a person. Show what makes you unique. Examples:

“I am a calm and solution-focused person, which helps me handle both stressful on-call shifts and anxious pet owners in a safe manner.”

5. End with a strong conclusion

Summarize why you are right for the job and express your willingness to come for an interview. Example:

“I look forward to contributing my skills and commitment to your team. I hope to have the opportunity to meet for an interview where I can tell you more about myself.”

6. Practical tips

• Keep the letter to a maximum of 1 A4 page.
• Use professional but personal language.
• Avoid spelling mistakes – always proofread.
• Write in the active form (“I have”, “I want to contribute”).
